Fun Food Holidays™ May is National Salad Month

Salad, derived from the Latin word Sal (salt), is a dish of raw green vegetables such as lettuce, either served alone or with other raw or cooked vegetables, or other ingredients and served with a dressing. Salt was an important ingredient of the dressing, hence the name.
Salad can also be a course of a meal. Since it is usually lighter than the main course, it is served earlier (often in place of or after an appetizer).
Salads themselves can take many forms including everything from bean salad, to lettuce salad, to bread salad, to potato salad... well, you get the idea. The key that ties them together as similar meals is the fact they are all held together by a dressing of some sort.
As "healthy" diets emerged, salads grew in popularity in the U.S. Today a salad is often eaten as the entree.
