ingredients

9 cups water
2 cups sugar
1 can (12 ounce size) frozen orange juice concentrate, slightly thawed
1 can (12 ounce size) frozen lemonade, slightly thawed
2 cups vodka
7-up or Sprite, as needed

directions

Combine the water and sugar in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let simmer for 20 minutes.

Stir in the orange juice, lemonade, and vodka and mix well.

Divide the orange mixture between two large baking dishes (11x7 or 9x13). Place the baking dishes in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Stir the mixture occasionally until the liquid has become slushy (it won't freeze completely).

To serve, fill glasses 1/2 to 3/4 full of the orange slush. Top with 7-up or Sprite. Garnish with a mint sprig, if desired. Serve immediately.

recipe tips

For a stronger orange flavor, add the zest of one orange to the sugar and water mixture.

Try different types of vodka, like citrus-flavored.

To speed up the freezing process, use shallow dishes for a larger surface area.

If the slush is too hard, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

For a decorative touch, rim the glasses with sugar or salt before adding the slush.

Try adding a splash of cranberry juice for color.

Serve in chilled glasses to keep the slush from melting too quickly.

For a festive look, add edible glitter or colored sugar to the mixture before freezing.

Remember to label the dishes as alcoholic if you're also serving a non-alcoholic version.

This is good! I tweeked the recipe slightly. First I only used 8 cups water, and 1 and 1/2 cups sugar. I also increased the vodka to 2 and 3/4 cups. The only other difference is I added the sugar to the water and brought it to a boil. Then I let cool some before adding the juices.. Fits perfectly in a gallon ice cream bucket, and tastes delicious. Also try topping off with champagne or spumante for an extra Sunday brunch kick!

Huge hit at our end of summer bash! In each individual glass we did add a little extra vodka for those who wanted it (um, most). I don't know if it would have frozen if we'd put it in the slush itself so adding it per serving worked just fine. Good summer drink for sure.

This was pretty light on the vodka so if serving to tea tottlers this is fine. I think you can double the vodka and it will still freeze ok since it's got so much of the sugar syrup. Adding the 7-up will dilute it enough so you aren't getting smashed but it will actually have vodka in each serving then.
