recipe tips

Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor in your Mai Tai.

Adjust the amount of simple syrup or orgeat to taste.

Try different types of rum to find your favorite combination.

For a stronger almond flavor, add a dash of almond extract to the drink.

Try using homemade orgeat syrup.

If serving at a party, pre-mix the Mai Tai ingredients (excluding ice) in a pitcher for easy serving.

Add a splash of grenadine for a touch of sweetness and color.

common recipe questions

What is orgeat?

Orgeat is a sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar, and rose water or orange flower water, commonly used in tropical cocktails for its nutty flavor.

Can I substitute almond extract for orgeat?

While almond extract can be used as a substitute for orgeat, it may not provide the same flavor and density. You might want to increase the amount of simple syrup a bit to make up for it.

What can I use instead of triple sec?

Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or any other orange liqueur can be used as a substitute for triple sec in a Mai Tai.

Can I use bottled lime juice instead of fresh lime juice?

Fresh lime juice is preferred for the best flavor. Bottled lime juice can be used as a substitute, but the taste may not be as fresh or vibrant.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version of the Mai Tai?

You can omit the rum and triple sec to make a non-alcoholic version of the Mai Tai. Increase the amount of orgeat, simple syrup, and orange juice.

Do I have to use both light and dark rum?

Using a combination of light and dark rum adds depth to the drink, but you can use only one type of rum if that's what you have available.

What type of fruit can I use as a garnish?

Common garnishes for a Mai Tai include a slice of lime, orange, pineapple, or a cherry. Get creative with your garnish choices.

Can I make a large batch of Mai Tai for a party?

You can multiply the ingredients to make a pitcher of Mai Tai for a crowd. Keep it chilled until ready to serve.

Can I make a frozen Mai Tai instead of serving it on the rocks?

You can blend the ingredients with ice to make a frozen Mai Tai for a slushy version.

tools needed

Cocktail Shaker: For mixing the ingredients together. A shaker allows for thorough blending of the rums, orgeat, triple sec, simple syrup, and lime juice.

Measuring Jigger: For measuring the different spirits and syrups needed in the recipe, such as the light rum, dark rum, orgeat, triple sec, and simple syrup.

Cocktail Glass: A tall cocktail glass to serve the Mai Tai, allowing for ample space for the ice and garnish.

Juicer: For extracting fresh juice from the lime.

what goes with it?

Grilled Shrimp Tacos: These shrimp tacos offer a light, zesty option that complements the tropical flavors of the Mai Tai.

Coconut Rice: A creamy side of coconut rice will enhance the island vibe of the Mai Tai. The subtle sweetness of the rice parallels the drink's sweetness and adds a comforting texture.

Seafood Ceviche: A cool, tangy ceviche will provide a refreshing contrast to the sweet Mai Tai.

Rum-Glazed Grilled Chicken: This dish offers a savory complement to the sweet and fruity Mai Tai. The grilled chicken, brushed with a rum-based glaze, creates a delicious connection to the cocktail's base ingredients.

Toasted Almonds: A light snack or topping that brings a nutty crunch, pairing surprisingly well with the orgeat in the cocktail. These can be served alongside or garnished in more elaborate dishes.

Mini Fruit Skewers: Fresh skewers of tropical fruit such as pineapple, mango, and kiwi will not only enhance the beachy theme but also provide a sweet, juicy bite that aligns with the Mai Tai's fruity flavor.

Papaya Salad: A light, refreshing papaya salad that marries bright, herbaceous notes with a zesty dressing.
