Waffles have been a popular food for centuries. They were called wafers by English speakers until Dutch immigrants convinced Americans that wafers were another thing altogether. Waferers were English street vendors who sold the little hot cakes centuries before little Bill Shakespeare arrived on the scene.
Today, we have the glory of the Waffle House, dotting the byways of the American South. How far we've come to have a holiday called National Waffle Day!
