crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

For a deeper flavor, saute the holy trinity vegetables in a skillet before adding them to the crockpot.

Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper for flavor.

Try adding other seafood like crab or crawfish for a seafood medley creole.

Serve shrimp creole with a side of crusty bread for dipping into the sauce.

To make it heartier, add cooked andouille sausage (or other smoked sausage) slices to the crock pot when you add the shrimp.

Adjust the seasoning towards the end of cooking to balance the flavors.

For a thicker sauce, mix a slurry of cornstarch and water and stir it into the crockpot during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

common recipe questions

What is the holy trinity in shrimp creole?

The holy trinity refers to the combination of celery, onion, and bell pepper that forms the base flavor profile of the dish.

Can I use canned diced tomatoes instead of whole tomatoes?

Yes, canned diced tomatoes can be used as a substitute for whole tomatoes in this recipe. Just make sure to drain any excess liquid before adding them to the crockpot.

Do I have to devein the shrimp?

While it is not necessary to devein the shrimp for this recipe, removing the vein can help improve the overall appearance and texture of the dish.

Can I use frozen shrimp?

You can use frozen shrimp for this recipe. Make sure to thaw them completely before adding them to the crockpot.

How long should I cook the shrimp in the crockpot?

The shrimp should be cooked in the crockpot for about an hour, or until they are heated through and turn pink. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become tough.

Can I use pre-cooked shrimp?

Pre-cooked shrimp can be used in this recipe, but they may become rubbery if cooked for too long in the crockpot. Add them towards the end of the cooking time to just heat them through.

How should I serve shrimp creole?

Shrimp creole is traditionally served over hot cooked rice to soak up the flavorful sauce. You can also garnish it with chopped parsley or sliced green onions for added freshness.

Can I freeze leftover shrimp creole?

Yes, shrimp creole can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating gently on the stovetop. Make sure not to heat it on high heat or the shrimp may become overcooked.

Do I have to use a crockpot for this recipe?

While using a crockpot is convenient for slow cooking, you can also make shrimp creole on the stovetop. Simmer the ingredients in a large pot for about an hour, or until the flavors meld together.

How do I store the leftovers?

Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop.

Loved this recipe. I was looking for something to make for Mardi Gras dinner party, and I turned to my slow cooker with this recipe. I added some okra, oregano, and red pepper flakes for more flavor, but everyone loved it!

  3. holly REVIEW:

Since I cooked this on high I added the shrimp during the last 30 minutes, not the last hour. Was afraid it would get overcooked otherwise. Was quite good. Served it with rice and additional tabasco for those who wanted it.

  4. Valerie REVIEW:

A wonderfully simple shrimp dish! I sauteed the celery, onion, and bell pepper before adding to the crock pot (just a matter of personal preference). If you use cooked shrimp you can just add it about 15-20 minutes before serving (just enough time to heat through). If your crock pot heats on the "hotter" side, turn it to low when you add the shrimp. I added a little creole seasoning in addition to the Tabasco.

Both my husband and I loved this. The only shrimp I had in the freezer was cooked, so I just added the cooked shrimp the last twenty minutes.
