Shrimp Butter Dip - CDKitchen.com

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

8 ounces salad shrimp, frozen or canned
2 tablespoons grated onion
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
3/4 cup butter, at room temperature
1 package (8 ounce size) cream cheese, softened
salt, to taste

directions

If using frozen shrimp, thaw it well. If using canned, drain it well.

Place the shrimp between paper toweling and gently press to remove any excess liquid. Transfer the shrimp to a cutting board and coarsely chop the shrimp. Set the shrimp aside.

In a mixing bowl, combine the grated onion, lemon juice, mayonnaise, butter, and cream cheese. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.

Stir the shrimp into the butter mixture. Season to taste with salt. Serve the shrimp butter dip with crackers for dipping or spread on cocktail bread.

If making the dip ahead of time, store it in a covered container in the refrigerator. Let the dip come to room temperature before serving.

recipe tips

If you prefer a chunkier dip, chop the shrimp more coarsely. For a smoother dip, chop it more fine.

For a more intense onion flavor, you can use green onions or chives instead of grated onion.

Adding a small amount of fresh dill or parsley can enhance the flavor with a fresh note.

For a more pronounced lemon flavor, include some grated lemon zest.

If the dip is for a party, consider garnishing with a sprinkle of paprika or additional chopped shrimp on top for presentation.

Always taste and adjust the seasoning before serving, as the saltiness of the shrimp can vary.

For a more spreadable consistency, especially if serving on bread, you can add an extra tablespoon or two of mayonnaise.

Making the dip ahead of time will help the flavors meld more but it can also be served immediately.

common recipe questions

Can I use fresh shrimp instead of frozen or canned?

Yes, you can use fresh shrimp. Just cook it first, then cool, and proceed as directed.

Is there a substitute for mayonnaise in this recipe?

You can use sour cream or Greek yogurt as a substitute for a tangier flavor.

How can I make the dip spicier?

Add a dash of cayenne pepper or a bit of hot sauce to the mixture to taste.

My dip is too thick, how can I thin it?

You can thin the dip by adding a little bit of milk or cream until you reach the desired consistency.

Is there a way to make this dip dairy-free?

Not really. You can use dairy-free alternatives for butter, mayonnaise, and cream cheese, but this will alter the taste and texture. Might have better results with a different recipe. We have other seafood dips on the website that you could try.

How can I reduce the fat content in this dip?

Use low-fat cream cheese and mayonnaise, and consider reducing the amount of butter.

What are some other ways to serve this dip?

It can be used as a filling for deviled eggs or as a spread for sandwiches.

Can this dip be served warm?

We don't recommend any warmer than room temperature. Because of the fat content from the butter, the dip will become runny if it is heated.

How long will this dip last in the refrigerator?

It should last for up to 3-4 days when stored in an airtight container.

Can I freeze the shrimp butter dip?

Freezing is not recommended as it may cause the ingredients to separate and affect the texture.
