The toddy is an 18th century hot drink made of liquor and spices. This version includes pear nectar for an extra soothing drink.

3 tablespoons soft unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 cup pear nectar
4 tablespoons brown sugar
4 ounces Akvavit liquor*
2 slices fresh or canned pear for garnish
2 slices lemon
2 cinnamon sticks
Combine the butter, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Mix well. Divide the butter mixture between 8-ounce heat-proof mugs or glasses.
Combine the pear nectar and brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the brown sugar is dissolved and the mixture is very hot.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the Akvavit. Pour the mixture over the butter in the mugs.
Add a slice of pear, a slice of lemon, and cinnamon stick to each mug. Serve immediately.
* Akvavit (pronounced "Aqua-vit") is a Danish liquor made with caraway seed, fennel seed, star anise, dill seed, coriander seed and cinnamon.
