ingredients

1 box (18.25 ounce size) German chocolate cake mix plus ingredients to prepare
7 ounces sweetened condensed milk
6 ounces caramel sauce
8 ounces frozen non-dairy whipped topping, thawed
8 Heath toffee candy bars, crushed

directions

Preheat oven as directed on cake mix package.

Prepare the cake as directed on package and bake in a 9x13-inch baking pan.

Let the cake cool slightly then poke holes evenly in the cake using the small end of a wooden spoon (or something else of similar size).

Evenly drizzle the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce over the slightly warm cake so that it drips into the holes.

Let the cake stand for 1-2 hours or until completely cooled and the sweet sauces have soaked in.

Spread the whipped topping over the cake evenly and then sprinkle with the crushed candy bars.

Store in the refrigerator.

  1. Chana REVIEW:

I have made this cake several times using condensed milk and it is very good, I have also used butterscotch topping with the caramel sauce instead of condensed milk. Also very but sweet. I haven't tried chocolate sauce I think it might be too chocolaty, just my opinion. The texture is very moist but I would not call it disturbing as someone did!

  2. dessert freak REVIEW:

Been making this for years for nearly every holiday or occasion. It's always a hit, never any left and it is so easy.

Do you pour the condensed milk over the cake and then the caramel or do you mix the two together and then pour over the cake? Thanks!

    • I'd personally pour them separately (easier, possibly more visually interesting) but I think you can do it either way.

  4. Ulysses REVIEW:

Been making this cake for years. Even those who balk at making desserts from mixes love it. It's addicting.

  5. Anonymous REVIEW:

This is the type of cake that tastes moist and homemade due to the addition or the caramel sauce and the fluffy whipped topping. The crunchy topping adds texture and interest to this simple-to-make cake. You can make this cake with other crushed candy bars of your choice or skip the crunchy topping and sprinkle mini chocolate bits on top for appearance and taste.

  6. pomalicious REVIEW:

Shame on you for posting this recipe! Do you know how many pounds I'm going to gain now that I've made this and can't stop eating it? LOLOL! Thank you - it's amazing. And so simple. Which could be a bad thing since it might mean I'll be making it frequently. Only change I made was to use a dark chocolate cake because the store didn't have german chocolate.

  7. LP REVIEW:

My only regret when I brought this to our office party was only making one cake. It was gone almost instantly. Everyone thought it was incredible.

  8. Loved It! REVIEW:

So, my only complaint is about the directions. A pencil? Please - use a straw or chopstick, not a pencil! Now that is out of the way, this cake is freaking amazing! Yes, it's made from a bunch of mixes and cans and stuff that's not good for you and probably totally unnatural but if you want to hear ooooohs and ahhhhhs from everyone eating it with their eyes rolling back in their heads, then this is the dessert.

  9. Shannon REVIEW:

Definitely one of the best desserts ever! I used devils food cake mix and it was amazing! so rich but yummy!

  10. princess REVIEW:

OMG!!! I don't like to bake but I was going to a picnic and they told me to bring desert. I saw this recipe and it looked simple. I had to give the recipe to 5 people at the picnic. This was awesome

  11. suzyq REVIEW:

Reading the reviews I decided to skip the chocolate chips and use chocolate syrup instead. After making it and eating some I definitely recommend that because the chocolate chips would be very hard to bite into since this is chilled. It's delicious and SOOOOOOOO rich so serve it in small portions (except to chocoholics like my husband who practically ate half the pan!)

  12. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

So easy to make and absolutely delicious! I just buy the bag of Heath bar bits in the baking aisle. Even better on day 2 if it lasts that long.

  13. smarty pants REVIEW:

I used to make this cake using chocolate sweetened condensed milk but I can't find that anymore. It's also good with the regular milk. I might try mixing some chocolate syrup into the milk next time to see if that gets close.

  14. tomcm5403 REVIEW:

I put holes into the cake with a funnel. I mix the caramel and sweetened condensed milk. I pour that into the holes, all around the cake. I use Cool Whip and top it off with 8- Skor candy bars. (I put the Skor candy bars in a plastic bag and use a baking mallet to crunch them into tiny pieces). Sprinkle it on top of the cake. Put into the refrigerator until ready to use. I made them for work an a 13 X 9 cake be gone in 15 minutes.

  15. pdgood REVIEW:

this cake is so easy and it is so good. the kids love it!!

  16. Debbie

Will it get too soggy if you make it a day ahead of time? I'm baking the cake now, would it be better to finish it just before serving?

  17. Tasha REVIEW:

the cake is awesome but is there another type of candy i can substitute that will still taste as orgasmic as this one? [email removed - you should never post your address publicly]

  18. caseyislove REVIEW:

  30. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

It was wonderful. I served it to my Bridge friends, and everyone wanted a copy of the recipe. Easy, easy, easy, and fast. My kind of recipe.

  31. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

I thought this cake was great!!! Pretty rich, but I still think it was great. I'm actually thinkin gof making it for my own birthday.

  32. snorkleparrot REVIEW:

My family has been making this recipe for about 15 years, and some people request it for their birthday cake! It's moist and delicious and easy! A real winner!

  33. bboops1 REVIEW:

I am not a baker but this is the only baking I do and it is so simple. I use German Choc Cake mix and I have never had it fail. Any choc cake mix will do it depends on the taste of your group. I never have any thing left over as it goes. Making 2 of them today. This is the best

  34. frogs19 REVIEW:

This is a big hit with guests. I did exactly as specified and it turned out wonderful. I am keeping this one for future use.

  35. Angie REVIEW:

This dessert is absolutely delicious! The chocolate chips do make it a little bit harder to cut and serve...it would be good with or without them.

  36. Hantie REVIEW:

This is a VERY easy to make cake -- and the MOST requested cake at all parties I go to. I NEVER have left overs. As to the previous review -- it IS very rich, and we usually cut it in smaller than average pieces. People can always go back for more if they want. I put the French Vanilla Cool Whip on top--- YUMMMMMM! Definitely a permanent KEEPER in our family!

  37. sandra REVIEW:

made this for a co-worker's birthday. What a hit!! I had several people ask me for the recipe. Best cake I have ever eaten!!

  38. Long time cook REVIEW:

This has been a favorite of every single person who's tasted it, for many years. It's been my standard for pot lucks ever since. It's unbelievable. I use real whipped cream, not "whipped topping." You won't be sorry!

  39. kitt REVIEW:

This cake really does not live up to the expectation of it's title. It is sickly sweet and the texture is disturbing, my husband, however, thought it was delicious!

  40. Katrina REVIEW:

its very good but this is wrong you use german chocolate cake trust me I just made some last night
