The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

ingredients
4 beets
boiling water
cold water
1 pint milk
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
directions
Remove tops from beets and wash. Place beets in boiling water and boil until tender. Plunge into cold water and slip off skins.
Cut in strips and drop into a hot cream dressing made of the milk, flour, butter and both salt and pepper.
