Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

under 30 minutes
ingredients
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 cup Cheddar cheese, shredded and at room temperature
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
directions
Place the butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and black pepper in a mixing bowl. Beat with a mixer on medium speed until the butter is fluffy and the seasonings are incorporated.
Add the Cheese and lemon juice and mix on medium-low speed until everything is incorporated.
Scoop the butter mixture onto a piece of waxed paper. Form it into a log shape and roll up in the waxed paper. Twist the ends to seal it.
Place the butter in the refrigerator until it is firm.
To use, slice off pieces as desired.
cook's notes
Only use freshly shredded Cheddar (not the pre-shredded kind - it contains starch that will prevent it from mixing with the butter properly).

Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
