The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

Homemade dressing can make a world of a difference for a salad. This fresh poppyseed dressing is perfect for summer, with loads of bright flavor from lemon juice and zest.

1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
2 teaspoons minced sweet onion
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup salad oil
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Combine the sugar, salt, mustard, lemon peel, onion, and lemon juice in a blender. Cover and process a few seconds to combine the ingredients. With the blender running on a low speed, slowly pour the oil through the feed hole in the lid in a steady stream. Continue to blend until the ingredients are incorporated and the dressing is thick.
Transfer the dressing to a jar. Stir in the poppy seeds. Use immediately or cover and store the poppy seed dressing in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.
