1 cup boiling water
1 cup chopped dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup butter, no substitute
1 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cup flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped nuts

1 cup brown sugar
4 teaspoons butter
1 pinch salt
chopped pecans
shredded coconut
4 tablespoons cream

Pour boiling water over chopped dates and soda. Let cool. Cream butter and sugar. Fold in beaten egg. Sift flour once, measure. Add baking powder and salt and sift once more. Sift again. Add flour mixture alternately with cooled date mixture to butter and sugar. Add vanilla and nuts.

Pour into 13x9" greased, floured, pan and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until just barely firm.

ICING: Combine sugar, cream, butter, and salt in saucepan and place over medium heat. Stir constantly until mixture begins to boil. Let simmer 1 minute without stirring.

Remove from heat. Place pan in cold water and beat mixture until of good spreading consistency. Ice cake. Sprinkle top with chopped pecans and coconut.
