1 bar German sweet chocolate
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 teaspoons butter flavoring
1 cup buttermilk
3 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
German Sweet Chocolate Glaze
1 bar German sweet chocolate
1 tablespoon shortening
1/4 cup water
1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
1 dash salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
German Chocolate Frosting
2 bars German sweet chocolate
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup water
1 dash salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups confectioners' sugar
directions
For German Chocolate Pound Cake: Partially melt chocolate over hot water. Remove and stir rapidly until melted. Cool.
Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, flavorings, and buttermilk. Sift together flour, soda, and salt; add to shortening. Mix well. Blend in chocolate.
Pour into a well-greased and well-floured 9-inch tube pan. Bake at 300 degrees F for 90 minutes.
Remove from pan while still hot and place under tightly fitting cover until thoroughly cooled. Serve plain or with the following glaze or frosting.
For German Sweet Chocolate Glaze: Melt chocolate and shortening in water; mix in remaining ingredients.
For German Chocolate Frosting: Melt chocolate and butter in water. Stir in salt, vanilla, and confectioners sugar.
