common recipe questions
What is a BLT dip?
BLT dip is a creamy appetizer that combines the classic flavors of a BLT sandwich - bacon, lettuce, and tomato - into a dip form.
Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?
Yes, Greek yogurt can be used as a substitute for sour cream. It will add a tangy flavor and a slightly different texture, but it works well.
What type of bacon should I use?
Use cooked bacon for the best flavor; you can choose between regular, smoked, or even turkey bacon. Make sure it is crispy as it will soften a bit in the dip.
What can I use instead of mayonnaise?
You can substitute mayonnaise with vegan mayonnaise or softened cream cheese thinned a little with milk or water. This will change the flavor and texture slightly.
How can I make the dip spicier?
To add spice, add a dash of hot sauce, a pinch of cayenne pepper, or diced jalapenos for heat.
Is it necessary to cook it in a crock pot?
If you don't have a small crock pot you can bake it in an oven-safe dish at 350 degrees F for about 20-25 minutes until heated through.
How long can BLT dip be stored in the refrigerator?
BLT dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Can I freeze BLT dip?
Freezing is not recommended for this dip as the mayonnaise and sour cream can separate when thawed.
How should I serve BLT dip?
Serve the dip directly from the crock pot with a variety of dipping options such as toasted bread, crackers, fresh vegetables like celery and carrots, or tortilla chips.
How do I know when the dip is done heating?
The dip is done when it is heated through and bubbly at the edges. For beset results, stir it once during the cooking time to make sure it heats evenly.
Can I add other ingredients to the BLT dip?
You can mix in chopped green onions, shredded cheese, or even diced avocado.
tools needed
Mixing Bowl: For combining the mayonnaise and sour cream until well blended before adding the diced tomato and bacon.
Measuring Cups: For measuring the mayonnaise, sour cream, and crumbled bacon.
Knife: To seed and dice the tomato. Can also be used to chop the bacon instead of crumbling it by hand.
Cutting Board: For dicing the tomato and bacon (if needed).
Crock Pot: For heating the dip mixture. The crock pot allows for even heating without the risk of curdling that might occur with higher heat.
Spatula or Spoon: For gently folding in the diced tomato and bacon into the mayo and sour cream mixture.
Serving Utensil (optional): For serving the dip directly from the crock pot, particularly if using bread, crackers, or veggies for dipping.
what goes with it?
Crusty Bread: Serve the dip with slices of crusty bread for a hearty option. The bread's texture holds the dip well, and reinforces the BLT sandwich theme.
Veggie Platter: Pair with fresh vegetable sticks like celery, carrots, and bell peppers.
Tortilla Chips: Use tortilla chips for a playful twist. Their saltiness works well with the savory bacon and creamy dip.
Stuffed Mini Peppers: Fill mini sweet peppers with the BLT dip for an appealing presentation. The sweetness of the peppers adds balance to the savory dip and makes for a colorful appetizer.
Bruschetta: Spread the dip on toasted baguette slices as a fancy hors d'oeuvre.
Pickle Platter: Serve alongside pickles or pickled vegetables. The acidity of the pickles cuts through the richness of the dip, providing a nice balance of flavors.
Grilled Chicken Strips: Offer smoked or grilled chicken strips for a protein-packed pairing.
Hot Sauce Drizzle: Add a few drops of hot sauce on top of the dip before serving. The heat can add a nice contrast to the creaminess of the dip.
beverage pairings
Wine Pairings
Chardonnay: A creamy, buttery Chardonnay will fit right in with the richness of the dip. Look for one that has ripeness and some oak to match the textured elements.
Sauvignon Blanc: A zesty Sauvignon Blanc offers a bright acidity that cuts through the richness of the dip. Opt for one with herbaceous notes to play nicely with the flavors of tomato and bacon.
Grenache: This medium-bodied red with juicy red fruit and spice pairs well with the saltiness of the bacon. Choose one that has soft tannins to keep things smooth.
Other Alcohol Pairings
Craft Beer: Try a hoppy IPA, which contains fruity and piney notes that can balance out the creamy dip.
Bacon-Infused Whiskey: This unique twist brings the pork flavor right to your drink. The smoke and savoriness echo the bacon in the dip and give you a fun, sipping experience.
Bloody Mary: This classic cocktail with tomato juice and deep flavors fits in seamlessly with a savory dip. Look for one that's well-seasoned, maybe even with a bacon garnish for extra flavor that matches the dip.
Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Tomato Juice: A chilled glass of pure tomato juice will blend nicely without the boozy factor. It offers a vibrant taste that complements the tomatoes in the dip.
Sparkling Grape Juice: Opt for a variety that's a bit sweet and sparkly, creating a festive atmosphere and a contrasting flavor against the richness of the dip. Plus, who doesn't like something bubbly?
Vegetable Juice Blend: A refreshing juice made with vegetables like celery and carrots pairs great with the dip. It adds veggie flavor without overpowering the other tastes and is healthy too!

I double this recipe every time I make it. Also, I use chopped cooked and drained bacon, not bacon bits as I think that gives it much better flavor than the stuff in a jar. I also find that you don't want to heat it in the crockpot for much more than 2 hours unless you have a warm setting you can keep it on after heating it the first hour on low. I tried this with sundried tomatoes and it was good but has a sharper more tangy flavor but I prefer the fresh. I haven't tried this with low fat or non fat mayo or sour cream. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has tried it and how it holds up in with the heat of the crock pot. Would love to cut a few calories off this yummy dip if I could!!
