The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

ingredients
4 medium oranges
water
2 cups sugar
2 cups vodka
directions
Squeeze juice from the oranges. Reserve the peel from one orange. With a sharp knife scrape the white membrane from the reserved peel and cut the peel into very thin strips. Add enough water to orange juice to make 2 cups.
In a saucepan combine orange juice mixture, orange peel and sugar. Bring to boiling, then reduce heat and simmer over low heat five minutes.
Cool mixture and pour into a large jar. Stir in vodka or rum. Cover with the lid and let stand at room temperature for 3 to 4 weeks. Strain liqueur.
