The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.
Algerian Cooked Carrot Salad

ingredients
1 pound carrots
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 pinch salt
1 pinch sugar
lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon cumin
parsley, chopped
directions
Scrape the carrots and quarter lengthwise. Cook in a little water with garlic and a pinch of salt and sugar, for 15 minutes. Drain and chill. Just before serving, cover with lemon juice, about salt, cayenne, cumin and garnish with parsley.
