- #75274

ingredients
1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1 can (8 ounce size) pineapple chunks, drained, reserve juice
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh garlic
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 pound round steak, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces, trimmed
1 cup baby-cut carrots, halved crosswise
1 large onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
3 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons cold water
1 large green bell pepper, cut into bite-sized pieces
hot cooked rice, if desired
green onion slices, if desired
directions
Combine brown sugar, vinegar, reserved pineapple juice, soy sauce and garlic in small bowl; stir until sugar is dissolved. Set aside.
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in 12-inch skillet until sizzling; add half of steak pieces. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until browned (4 to 5 minutes). Place steak pieces in slow cooker. Repeat with remaining butter and steak pieces.
Add carrots and onion to slow cooker. Pour pineapple juice mixture over vegetables. Cover; cook on Low heat setting for 7 to 9 hours, or on High heat setting for 3 to 4 hours or until meat is tender.
Increase heat setting to High. Dissolve cornstarch in cold water in small bowl. Stir cornstarch mixture, pineapple chunks and green pepper into beef mixture.
Cover; continue cooking 30 minutes or until green pepper is crisply tender and juices are thickened. Serve over hot cooked rice and garnish with green onions, if desired.

crock pot notes
Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.nutrition data
Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.
Beer makes batters better, meat more tender, and sauces more flavorful.

When I was making this I thought it would be more flavorful than what the other reviews described but I think the long cooking time really does fade the flavors. Added more soy sauce but I think seasoning the meat before browning it would also help add flavor.

I agree that it's just a tad bland. Add more soy sauce when you add the cornstarch since the flavors fade as the crockpot cooks the food.

The dish was well thought out. The textures and portions worked very well. Perhaps a little more liquid for more sauce. The beef was very tender and although I didn't think the recipe was specific, I cut it into 3/4" by 1 1/2" pieces. The colors were appealing. We did add red and yellow bell as well as green. We served three large and had enough for two freezer meals. The flavor was very good but seemed to lack a final kick. So if you like it just a tad bland you will love it. I thought more soy would have been good. All in all, A very good way to enjoy some of the extra round steak you have in your freezer. Granpajohn
