A cheerful cocktail using gin, rum, and maple syrup, topped off with fresh lime juice. Served over ice, it's a fun addition to your holiday drinks.
ice
1 cup gin
1 cup light rum
1/4 cup lime juice
1/4 cup maple syrup
Fill a cocktail glass with crushed ice.
Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. Add the gin, rum, lime juice, and maple syrup. Shake well then pour over the crushed ice.
Serve immediately.
Try different types of rum for varied flavors.
Serve the cocktail immediately after mixing so it doesn't get watered down.
Try using a flavored simple syrup in place of maple syrup for a unique twist.
If you prefer a sweeter drink, adjust the maple syrup to taste.
For a twist, try adding a splash of club soda after pouring to give it some fizz.
You can substitute vodka for gin and use tequila or brandy for the rum for a different flavor.
Honey, agave syrup, or simple syrup can be used as alternatives to maple syrup. Keep in mind that these options may slightly change the flavor.
Garnish it with a lime wedge, a sprig of mint, or even a cinnamon stick for a festive touch.
You can create a mocktail version by omitting the gin and rum and replacing them with soda water or tonic for added fizz, while keeping the lime juice and maple syrup.
A chilled cocktail glass or a highball glass works well for serving Santa's Nightcap.
When shaking cocktails, use a firm grip on the shaker and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds to make sure all ingredients are well combined and chilled.
Cocktail Shaker: For mixing the gin, rum, lime juice, and maple syrup thoroughly before pouring the mixture over the crushed ice.
Measuring Cups: For measuring the gin, rum, lime juice, and maple syrup.
Cocktail Glass: Used for serving the drink. A cocktail glass filled with crushed ice holds the final mixed drink.
Blender: For crushing ice to fill the cocktail glass if you don't have an ice machine that dispenses crushed ice.
Strainer (optional): If the cocktail shaker does not have a built-in strainer, a separate strainer may be needed to prevent ice or other solids from pouring into the glass.
Mint Leaves: Use fresh mint leaves as a garnish for the cocktail to bring out its refreshing quality.
Coconut Water: Add coconut water into the mix for a tropical twist.
Ginger Beer: Serve the Santa's Nightcap with a splash of ginger beer. The spiciness of the ginger beer will provide a nice contrast to the sweetness of the maple syrup.
Citrus Fruit Slices: Add lime or orange slices as a garnish. The additional citrus will amplify the drink's acidity.
Charcuterie Board: Pair the cocktail with a charcuterie board featuring cured meats, cheeses, and pickles. The savory and salty notes from the board balance the sweetness of the cocktail.
Spicy Nuts: Serve spicy mixed nuts as a crunchy snack alongside the drink. The heat and saltiness from the nuts will complement the sweetness from the maple syrup.
Chocolate Truffles: Offer dark chocolate truffles as a sweet pairing. The richness of chocolate and its bitterness will create a nice balance with the sweetness of the cocktail.
Shrimp Cocktail: A shrimp cocktail with lime-infused dipping sauce would work well with the drink.
Grilled Pineapple: Serve with grilled pineapple slices. The caramelized sugars of the pineapple add a fruity depth that complements the maple syrup in the drink.
Savory Cheese Platter: Serve alongside a selection of tangy cheeses. Cheeses like goat or blue cheese have flavors that can stand up to the sweetness of the cocktail.

Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.
A can of cream of mushroom soup can be a real dinner saver. It works great in casseroles and can turn into a sauce or gravy in a pinch.

I'm not sure why it's called Santa's Nightcap other than you might need to call it a night after drinking this! Interesting flavor combination that got more palatable as you drank. You have to like gin and rum to enjoy it, don't count on the maple syrup masking any flavors.
