Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

This is my husband's favorite meal. I tweak it sometimes and nothing I add to it ruins the taste. I sometimes add some chopped cabbage, an extra can of hominy, a cup of cut green beans or I add my own herbs and spices like 2 bay leaves, 1 Tbsp dried parsley or rosemary. Whatever your family's favorites. The taste gets better each time I make it.
