The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

A mock dessert "lasagna" made with pound cake, cream cheese, strawberries, vanilla pudding mix, kirsch, and whipping cream.

2 packages (8 ounce size) cream cheese, softened
2 packages (3 ounce size) instant vanilla pudding mix
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
1 cup milk
8 cups mashed strawberries
1/4 cup kirsch
1 cup sugar
2 loaves pound cake
1 cup whipping cream
Beat the first 4 ingredients in a mixer until smooth. Combine the next 3 ingredient in a small bowl, mixing well. Remove 1 cup of the strawberry mixture. Puree in a food process and reserve.
Slice the pound cake into 1/2 inch slices. Layer a 13x9 inch dish into thirds of each: 1/2 inch cake slices, strawberry mixture, cake and cream cheese. Swirl the remaining strawberry mixture over the top. Chill for 4-8 hours.
Whip the whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Cut the dessert into 3 inch squares to serve. Top with reserved strawberry puree and whipped cream.

A can of cream of mushroom soup can be a real dinner saver. It works great in casseroles and can turn into a sauce or gravy in a pinch.
Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

I'm giving this four stars despite the fact that the directions are really difficult to understand. I actually had to make this twice. The first time, it was a mess because I tried to follow the directions. Here's my take on it after making it the second time: The mashed strawberries with kirsch was too watery. Mash the strawberries with the sugar or use frozen sweetened strawberries. Use kirsch in place of part of the milk, or as needed, to thin the cream cheese mixture. I actually used just 1/8 cup of kirsch and it was the consistency I expected. I did use the sugar free pudding mix so that might make a difference. Add the pudding mix first, then the liquids, until it is thick but very spreadable. Cut the pound cake into 1/4" slices. 1/2" is too thick. Layer as follows: 1 layer of pound cake, spread one layer of the cream cheese mixture, top with one layer of the strawberry puree. Repeat the layers twice (ending with a layer of strawberries). Before serving, top with whipped cream. Overall, I loved the recipe once I had it done. Very tasty and pretty. I think to complete the "lasagna" feel it might have been nice to have toasted coconut sprinkled over the top (to resemble Parmesan cheese).
