Not quite as dry as the gin martini that James Bond enjoys. This version is made with a combination of dry and sweet vermouth to balance out the flavor a bit.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 1/2 ounce gin
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1/2 cup ice cubes
lemon twist or green olive (optional)

directions

Combine the gin, both kinds of vermouth, and ice in a mixing glass or shaker. Shake or stir then strain into a martini glass.

Serve with a lemon twist or olive, if desired.

recipe tips

Use high-quality gin and vermouth.

Experiment with different brands and types of vermouth to find your preferred balance.

Chill all components, including glassware and mixing tools.

Add a dash of orange bitters for an extra layer of flavor.

Keep your cocktail simple and classic, as too many additions can overwhelm the delicate balance of a martini.

Adjust vermouth amounts based on the strength of the gin you are using; some gins may require more or less to balance the flavor.

common recipe questions

What is a Medium Dry Martini?

A Medium Dry Martini is a cocktail that combines gin and both dry and sweet vermouth, resulting in a balanced drink that is not too dry or sweet.

Can I use vodka instead of gin?

You can substitute vodka for gin if you prefer a different base spirit, but it will alter the flavor of the cocktail, making it less aromatic.

What is the purpose of vermouth in a Martini?

Vermouth adds complexity, depth, and herbal notes to the drink, balancing the stronger flavor of the gin.

How do I know which brand of gin to choose?

Choose a gin that is high-quality. London Dry gin is a popular choice, known for its juniper flavors, while other types may have more floral or botanical notes.

Can I adjust the ratios of ingredients?

You can adjust the ratios of gin, dry vermouth, and sweet vermouth based on your personal taste. Some prefer a drier martini with less vermouth, while others like it a bit sweeter.

Is stirring better than shaking?

Stirring is traditionally preferred for a martini as it creates a smoother texture; shaking can introduce tiny ice flakes and dilutes the drink more quickly.

How should I serve a martini?

Serve your martini in a chilled martini glass. Consider chilling your glass ahead of time by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Make sure to shake out any residual liquid before adding the martini to the glass.

What is the alcohol content of a medium dry martini?

The alcohol content varies, but a standard 1 1/2 ounce gin and 1 ounce of total vermouth generally result in a drink that is approximately 25-30% alcohol by volume.

what goes with it?

Seafood Ceviche: The citrusy, bright flavors of a shrimp and crab ceviche align with the lemon twist in the martini.

Herbed Olives: A bowl of marinated olives can be a simple yet effective pairing.

Canapes: Small canapes topped with smoked salmon or tuna offer a bite that pairs well with the martini's crisp and dry characteristics.

Charcuterie Board: Pair the medium dry martini with a selection of cured meats and cheeses for a classic aperitif experience. The saltiness of the meats and the creaminess of the cheeses balance the drink's herbal notes.

Oysters: Serve fresh oysters on the half shell alongside a martini. Their brininess enhances the gin's botanicals.

Spicy Nuts: Offer a bowl of spiced nuts. The heat from the spices will contrast with the martini's crisp and cold profile, creating a refreshing balance.

Olive Tapenade: Serve with crusty bread or crackers. The rich, briny flavors of the olive tapenade pair nicely with the olive notes in the martini if you select an olive garnish.

Marinated Artichokes: Serve marinated artichoke hearts alongside the martini. Their acidity and tanginess echo the drink's refreshing qualities while adding a Mediterranean flair.
