There aren't many things more delicate than your baby's bottom, so why would you put some manufactured product with unknown chemicals on it? Instead, make your own gentle baby powder with ingredients you control. This recipe can easily be doubled. Orris root already has a floral, violet-like scent so if you want a less fragrant version you can omit the chamomile flowers.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

2 tablespoons crumbled dried chamomile flowers, optional
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon dry orris root powder
1/2 teaspoon alum

directions

Combine the ingredients in a sifter and sift onto a piece of waxed paper. Discard any bits of flowers left in the sifter.

Use the waxed paper to funnel the baby powder into a powder shaker. Store in a dry location.

recipe tips

Make sure that the chamomile flowers are completely dried before adding them to the powder mixture.

Use a sifter to make sure that the baby powder has a fine, smooth texture for easy application.

Avoid inhaling the powder when applying it to the baby's skin to prevent respiratory irritation.

Keep the baby powder out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.

If using the powder on cloth diapers, make sure to rinse them thoroughly to remove any residue before reuse.

Label the container with the date it was made to keep track of freshness. The powder should remain fresh for up to 2 months if kept away from moisture.

Store the baby powder away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation of the ingredients.

common recipe questions

What is orris root powder?

Orris root powder is derived from the dried root of the iris plant. It has a floral, violet-like scent and is often used in perfumes and cosmetic products.

Why use chamomile flowers in baby powder?

Chamomile flowers can add a gentle, soothing scent to the baby powder, making it calming and pleasant for the baby.

Can I omit the chamomile flowers?

Yes, if you prefer a less fragrant version of the baby powder, you can omit the chamomile flowers without affecting the effectiveness of the powder.

What is alum and why is it used in this recipe?

Alum is a white powdery substance that is used as an astringent and helps to absorb moisture. It is added to baby powder to keep the baby's skin dry and prevent diaper rash.

Can I substitute orris root powder or alum?

It is best to use the specified ingredients for this recipe to provide the desired texture and effectiveness of the baby powder. Substituting may alter the consistency and properties of the powder.

How should I store the baby powder?

Store the baby powder in a dry location, preferably in an airtight container to prevent moisture from affecting its texture.

Is this baby powder safe for all babies?

While the ingredients in this baby powder recipe are natural and gentle, it's always a good idea to test a small amount on a small patch of the baby's skin to check for any allergic reactions before regular use. It's also best to consult with your pediatrician before using new or homemade products on your baby.

How can I apply the baby powder?

You can apply the baby powder by sprinkling a small amount into your hand and then gently patting or rubbing it onto the baby's skin. Avoid applying too much powder in one area to prevent clumping.

Can I use a different type of powder shaker?

If you don't have a powder shaker, you can store the baby powder in a clean, empty spice container with a shaker top for easy application.

Can I use this baby powder on myself?

While this baby powder is gentle enough for babies, it can also be used by adults as a natural alternative to commercial body powders.
