The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.
Watermelon with Gin

- #21362
over 5 hrs
ingredients
1 whole watermelon
1 cup gin
directions
Cut a wedge-shaped circular piece about 3 or 4 inches in diameter from the middle of the watermelon (Like cutting the top off a pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern, but from the middle, not the end).
Remove the plug and remove about a cup of the watermelon from underneath. Pour in the gin. Replace the plug and secure in place with masking tape.
Leave in the refrigerator for a couple of days. The gin will permeate the whole watermelon. Cut and serve.
Alternative method (if you are short of time and can't wait a couple of days): Take a (large) hypodermic syringe, fill with gin. Inject into the watermelon in lots of places until you have got as much gin in as you wish.

They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
This iconic whiskey is a "Jack of all trades" when it comes to cooking. Toss it in some pasta, as a savory dipping sauce, and even bake it into something sweet.
