Ranking #1 in nearly every "favorite cookie" poll, the chocolate chip cookie is pretty much the go-to cookie of choice for both kids and grownups alike.

The American actress, Katharine Hepburn, was beautiful, intelligent, and a little bit eccentric. She was also known for her rich, chocolately brownies.
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1/4 pound unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Butter an 8-inch square baking pan.
In a heavy saucepan, melt the chocolate with the butter over low heat, stirring until completely melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the sugar. Add eggs and vanilla extract and "beat it all like mad." Stir in the flour, salt and walnuts and mix well.
Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40 minutes. Take it out; let it cool; cut into squares and go crazy.

These brownies are pretty foolproof. I like them because they aren't gimmicky like some recipes that call for weird ingredients just to try to stand out. These are good traditional brownies that everyone always loves.

This is the EXACT same recipe I found in the Lady's Home Journal about 25 years ago! It was listed along with an interview with the great Katharine. They are the BEST brownies EVER! Rich, gooey, chocolately. Easy, easy to make. Your guests and family will go nuts!

Since I discovered this recipe, I have never made any other -- not even a mix when I'm short on time. Because this is the easiest (one bowl!) recipe in the world and it is certainly the best. Use high-end chocolate for an even better result (like Scharffenberger). Cooking time might be a little shorter than listed and they are so fudgy they won't cut into neat squares unless they are completely cool. But it is hard to wait that long. Oh, the dilemma. Neat fudgy squares or warm gooey mess? Always make a double batch (in a 13x9 pan). One batch is never enough.
