Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
Cubed Steaks, Italian Style

ingredients
1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon marjoram
6 cubed steaks (3 to 4 ounce size)
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 can (16 ounce size) Italian-style plum tomatoes
1 can (8 ounce size) tomato sauce
2 cups diced celery
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 can (7 ounce size) ripe olives, drained and halved
6 slices Mozzarella cheese
directions
Mix flour, salt, pepper, oregano and marjoram in shallow dish. Dredge steaks in flour mixture.
Heat butter and oil in large skillet. Add steaks in single layer. Cook just until brown on both sides. Remove with slotted spatula.
Stir any remaining flour into pan juices. Cook and stir 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes and tomato sauce. Cook, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.
Return meat to skillet. Add celery, green pepper and olives; cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes until meat is tender.
Transfer steaks to heat proof platter. Top each steak with a slice of cheese. Broil until cheese is golden. Spoon sauce around meat.
Serve at once with cooked noodles or spaghetti.
