The combination of butterscotch and Irish cream makes a shot so delicious you may forget it has alcohol.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 ounce buttershots liqueur
1/2 ounce Irish cream liqueur

directions

Pour the buttershots liqueur into a 2 ounce shot glass. Pour the Irish cream over the back of a spoon into the glass so it floats on top.

Serve immediately.

If you don't want a layered drink you can shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into the shot glass.

recipe tips

Chill the liqueurs beforehand for a smoother shot.

Pour the Irish cream slowly and steadily for a clean layer.

Experiment with the ratios to find your preferred balance of buttershots to Irish cream.

Watch out, these taste like candy but pack a punch!

common recipe questions

How did it get its name?

It's one of the many gimmicky "sexy" names created for drinks in the 80s. It's also sometimes called a "butter shot" or "butterball shooter". Sometimes it will have vodka in it as well but that's not the classic version.

Can I use a different type of cream liqueur?

Yes, you can use other cream liqueurs, but the flavor profile will be different from Irish cream. Try Rumchata or Bourbon cream.

Is there a non-alcoholic version of this shot?

For a non-alcoholic version, use butterscotch syrup and a half-and-half or heavy cream.

How do I layer the liqueurs properly?

Pour the Irish cream over the back of a spoon gently to help it float on top of the buttershots liqueur.

Can I make a large batch of this shot for a party?

You can combine the buttershots and Irish cream in a pitcher and chill for 1-2 hours, but you won't get the layered look.

How should I serve this shot?

Serve in a standard 2-ounce shot glass, chilled if desired. You can also double it and serve in a larger shot glass.

Can I add other flavors to this shot?

While this shot is typically made with just buttershots and Irish cream, you could experiment with adding a dash of vanilla or cinnamon.

What can I garnish this shot with?

Garnish isn't typical for this shot, but you could add a small sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top for a decorative touch.
