If you love chocolate, why not combine two of your favorites into one delicious treat. Brownie waffles can be served for breakfast or dessert.

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
1/3 cup butter
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
3 large eggs, separated
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat a waffle iron. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
Combine the chocolate and butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is uniform in color. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and cocoa powder.
In a large bowl, combine the egg yolks, milk, sour cream, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer for 1 minute.
With the mixer running, slowly add the flour to the egg mixture and mix until fully incorporated. Add the melted chocolate and mix for 1-2 more minutes.
Stir the walnuts into the brownie batter by hand.
Beat the egg whites in a small bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the brownie batter.
Grease the waffle iron. Spoon the brownie batter onto the waffle iron grid (fill it about 2/3rds full) and close the lid. Cook until the waffles are crisp and lightly browned.
Remove the waffle from the waffle iron and place on a baking sheet in the heated oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining brownie waffle batter.
Serve the waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream.
