ingredients

1 package (1 pound size) Italian sausage
1 jar (15 ounce size) tomato pasta sauce
1 can (4 ounce size) sliced mushrooms, drained
1 green bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
1 medium onion, sliced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon dried parsley
8 Italian rolls

directions

Slice the sausage into 1-inch pieces. Add to the crock pot along with the pasta sauce, mushrooms, green bell pepper, onion, oregano, Italian seasoning, and parsley. Stir well.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low heat for 3-4 hours or until the sausage is cooked through.

Spoon the sausage and sauce onto the rolls and serve hot. Can top with shredded Mozzarella cheese if desired.

crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

Toasting the rolls before serving helps keep them from getting soggy.

Try provolone cheese instead of Mozzarella.

For a thicker sauce, add a tablespoon of tomato paste.
If the sauce is too thick, thin it with a little water or broth.

Cooking the sausage in a skillet before adding to the crock pot can provide extra flavor and texture (but it's not required).

Serve with a side salad or coleslaw.

Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and make great next-day sandwiches.

For a healthier version, use chicken or turkey sausage or a plant-based sausage substitute.

Try adding other vegetables like zucchini or red bell peppers.

If you prefer a cheesier sandwich, mix some grated Parmesan into the sauce.

common recipe questions

Can I use fresh mushrooms instead of canned?

Yes, fresh mushrooms can be used; saute them first for the best texture.

What can I substitute for Italian seasoning?

A mix of basil, thyme, and rosemary can be used as a substitute.

Is there a vegetarian alternative for Italian sausage?

Vegetarian sausage or portobello mushrooms can be used as alternatives.

Can I cook this on high heat to reduce the cooking time?

Yes, cook on high for 1.5 to 2 hours, but low heat is recommended for best results.

How can I make this recipe spicier?

Add crushed red pepper flakes or use hot Italian sausage.

Can I use a different type of roll?

Sub rolls, ciabatta, or any sturdy bread that holds up well to sauce can be used.

Can I make this ahead of time and reheat it?

Yes, this recipe reheats very well. Make the recipe as directed then let cool. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. It can be reheated in the crock pot or on the stovetop (if frozen, let thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating).
