Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

The sweet applesauce and orange soda combine to create a deliciously tangy and sweet flavor, while the orange gelatin powder gives the Halloween salad a festive orange color.

ingredients
1 cup sweetened applesauce
1 box (3 ounce size) dry orange gelatin powder
12 ounces orange soda
directions
Heat the applesauce in a saucepan over medium heat. When hot, stir in the orange gelatin powder. Mix until the gelatin has completely dissolved.

Stir in the orange soda and mix until incorporated. Transfer the Halloween salad to a decorative bowl. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salad until it is well chilled and set, about 4 hours.
