Chocolate Dumplings

ingredients
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1 tablespoon cornstarch
salt
2 cups water
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup milk
3 tablespoons shortening, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
directions
Combine the first six ingredients in large skillet, mixing well. Heat until sauce comes to a boil and thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
Stir last nine ingredients together to blend, then beat 1 minute. Return skillet to stove top, cover and heat until sauce boils gently.
Drop dumplings by tablespoonfuls into sauce. Cover and simmer gently about 20 minutes. Peek just once to make sure sauce is simmering.
Serve hot with ice cream or whipped cream.
