ingredients

2 cups Bisquick baking mix
2/3 cup milk

directions

Combine the Bisquick and milk in a bowl. Stir together until the mixture is smooth.

Bring your stew or soup to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and drop the dumpling batter by spoonfuls onto the simmering stew or soup. Let cook for 10 minutes uncovered. Do not stir. Cover the pot and cook for 10 more minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through.

Serve the Bisquick dumplings and stew hot.

recipe tips

Do not overmix the dumpling batter; mix just until combined or the dumplings may be dry or tough.

Drop the dumplings into simmering, not boiling, liquid to cook them gently. If the liquid is boiling they may fall apart.

Keep the pot uncovered for the first 10 minutes of cooking to allow the dumplings to set.

Cover the pot for the last 10 minutes to fully cook the dumplings through.

Serve the dumplings immediately for the best texture.

Be careful not to crowd the dumplings in the pot, as they need space to expand.

Try adding different herbs, spices, or ingredients to the dough for variety.

Only gently stir the stew or soup when adding the dumplings to prevent them from breaking apart.

Add some additional flavor to your dumplings

Herbs and Spices: Add 1-2 teaspoons of dried herbs and spices such as basil, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to the baking mix.

Vegetables: Incorporate 1/4 to 1/2 cup of finely chopped vegetables like spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, or green onions into the dumpling dough.

Bacon or Ham: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of crumbled cooked bacon or diced ham.

Yogurt: Replace 1/3 cup of the milk with plain yogurt for a tangy touch.

Fresh Herbs: Mix in 2-3 tablespoons of freshly chopped herbs like parsley, cilantro, or chives.

Onions: Saute 1/3 cup onions until caramelized and add it to the dumpling dough.

Hot Sauce or Sriracha: Add 1-2 teaspoons of your favorite hot sauce or sriracha for a spicy kick.

I love this recipe, but I hate having to Google it every time I make it now. Can we put the recipe back on the box? :)

    • You'll need to take that up with Betty Crocker. We here at CDKitchen, unfortunately, can't help you there!

I am disappointed the Bisquick dumpling recipe is no longer on the box. It's a tradition and I could always, always find the handy recipe right there on the box. Please bring it back!

Help i keep making this recipe just like it is wrote. But most of my dumplings are doughy. Why?

    • Sounds like they need to cook longer. Try extending the first cooking time where they are uncovered by a couple of minutes then proceed and adjust the second cooking time (covered) as needed.

Love it! Just made chicken and dumplings for dinner tonight for my retired Air Force niece and my Mom, using this Bisquick recipe Mom has used for years. It is definitely the best!! They were the best! My niece had to split what was left with my other niece to take home for leftovers tomorrow. She said it was as good as Gramma's!

This is a very simple recipe. I changed it a bit by adding some broth from the chicken with the milk, then I added some basil, sage and salt to the batter. So easy.
