A layered taco dip that brings together creamy layers of bean dip, seasoned sour cream, and fresh toppings. Just right for dipping with tortilla chips.
1 container (16 ounce size) sour cream, low fat is fine
2 tablespoons taco seasoning mix
1 can (6 ounce size) sliced black olives
1 cup diced fresh tomatoes
2 bunches green onions, chopped
2 ripe avocados, pits removed, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup mayonnaise, low fat is fine
1 can (9 ounce size) bean dip
8 ounces freshly shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
tortilla chips
Combine the sour cream and taco seasoning in a bowl. Mix well. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours before assembling the dip.
When ready to assemble the taco dip, combine the black olives, diced tomatoes, and chopped green onion in a bowl and mix gently.
In another bowl, mash together the avocado, lemon juice, and mayonnaise.
Spread the bean dip in the bottom of a glass pie plate or baking dish for the first layer. Spread the avocado mixture evenly over the bean dip layer. Spread the seasoned sour cream mixture over the avocado layer.
Evenly sprinkle the tomato mixture over the sour cream then top with the shredded cheese.
Serve the dip immediately with tortilla chips.
Use ripe avocados for the best flavor and texture.
Pre-chill the ingredients before layering to keep the dip fresh and cool.
Try adding a layer of roasted corn for extra sweetness and color.
Try different cheeses, such as Monterey Jack or pepper jack, for variety.
For a lower-carb option, serve the dip with sliced cucumbers or bell peppers instead of chips.
Add a sprinkle of fresh cilantro or parsley on top for color and additional flavor.
Try using homemade or artisan tortilla chips for a more gourmet touch.
Greek yogurt can be used as a healthy substitute for sour cream, adding a similar creaminess with extra protein and a tangy flavor.
Ripe Hass avocados are ideal as they have a creamy texture and rich flavor. Make sure they are slightly soft to the touch but not overly mushy.
Yes, store-bought guacamole can be a convenient alternative. You can omit the lemon juice and mayonnaise (or add mayo as desired).
Using low-fat or regular mayonnaise works well. For a healthier twist, consider using avocado mayonnaise, which adds a similar flavor.
Absolutely, you can add layers of refried beans or cooked/canned black beans for added protein and texture.
Yes, this dip can be prepared a few hours in advance; just cover it tightly and store it in the refrigerator to prevent browning of the avocado layer.
Leftovers can stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
Freezing is not recommended as it can compromise the texture of the ingredients, particularly the avocado and sour cream.
If you're not a fan of black olives, you can substitute them with green olives, diced jalapenos, or leave them out entirely.
For extra heat, you can add diced jalapenos, a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, or your favorite hot sauce to the avocado layer or the tomato mixture.
Glass Pie Plate or Baking Dish: A shallow, round glass pie plate or an equivalent baking dish for layering the taco dip. You want something with a little bit of a lip around the edge to make it easier to scoop the dip.
Mixing Bowls: Multiple mixing bowls are necessary for combining the ingredients that make up the various layers of the dip.
Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients like taco seasoning, mayonnaise, and lemon juice.
Sharp Knife: A knife to chop the avocados, green onions, and tomatoes for the dip.
Cutting Board: A cutting for cutting and preparing the vegetables and avocados.
Spoon or Spatula: A spoon or spatula for mixing and spreading the layers of the dip in the dish.
Guacamole: Serve alongside the 5 Layer Taco Dip for a burst of fresh flavor and an alternative to the heavier dip.
Ground Beef: Cooked and seasoned ground beef can be added as a layer to the dip to provide some extra protein.
Salsa: A zesty salsa can offer a contrasting texture and additional flavor. It provides a nice kick that complements the creamy elements of the dip.
Bacon Cheese Quesadillas: Pair with cheesy quesadillas for a fun twist. The melted cheese and crispy tortilla give a satisfying bite that matches the dip's flavors.
Jalapeno Slices: Fresh or pickled jalapenos can be a hot topping for those who enjoy spice. They add an extra layer of heat that pairs well with the dip.
Refried Beans: Warm refried beans can be an additional layer on their own or served as a side. Their hearty, creamy texture matches well with the dip's richness.
Chili Powder: Dusting a bit of chili powder on top of the dip before serving can enhance the overall flavor. It brings a subtle warmth and enhances the taco seasoning.
Cilantro: Fresh cilantro can be used as a garnish to brighten the dish. Its herbal notes can cut through the richness of the dip.
Wine Pairings
Sauvignon Blanc: This wine is crisp and full of zesty citrus flavors that will brighten up the rich layers of the taco dip. Look for one that has grassy or herbal notes, which can enhance the fresh elements in the dip.
Chardonnay: A lightly oaked Chardonnay can bring some smooth creaminess to the table. Look for one that offers a balance between fruity flavors like apple and a touch of vanilla. This pairs well with the sharp cheddar and creamy avocado layers.
Grenache: This red wine is fruit-forward, often with berry flavors and a hint of spice. It won't overshadow the freshness of the dip and will complement the savory taco seasoning and beans nicely.
Other Alcohol Pairings
Margarita: A classic margarita made with fresh lime juice can complement the acidity in the dip and the flavors of the taco seasoning. The salt on the rim adds a nice touch and matches well with the chips.
Pilsner: This crisp and refreshing beer will complement the richness of the dip without being heavy. Look for a light, clean style with a slight bitterness that will work nicely with all the savory flavors going on.
Tequila Sunrise: The fruity and citrusy notes from this cocktail can mesh well with the avocado and the fresh veggies in the dip. Plus, the colors can look pretty fun next to the layered dip.
Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lime: This drink will offer a refreshing fizz that can cut through the richness of the dip and keep things light and lively.
Fruit Punch: A tropical fruit punch can bring a fun sweetness to balance the saltiness of the dip. Look for one with real fruit juice for a more vibrant flavor.
Cucumber Mint Cooler: This drink can be super refreshing and works well with the fresh ingredients in the dip.

I made this for a potluck and every bit of it went! I put only one bunch of green onions, I think two would have been too much. I think that next time I may not use as much mayonaise with the avocado, it kind of hid the avacado's taste.
