Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

crock pot notes
Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.recipe tips
Use a combination of orange juice and zest for a more intense orange flavor.
Add a splash of maple syrup for extra sweetness.
Reserve some pecans to sprinkle on top just before serving.
Add a dash of bourbon or rum along with the orange juice.
Add a sprinkle of sea salt just before serving to bring out the sweetness of the dish.
If you want a smoother consistency, you can mash the sweet potatoes before serving.
If you prefer a less sweet dish, reduce the amount of brown sugar.
common recipe questions
What types of sweet potatoes are best for this recipe?
The best types of sweet potatoes for this recipe are the orange-fleshed varieties like Beauregard or Jewel, as they provide the desired sweetness and creamy texture. Most supermarket chains, however, typically only have one choice in the produce section (and those will work just fine).
Can I use other types of sugar instead of dark brown sugar?
You can substitute light brown sugar or even white granulated sugar, though the flavor will be less rich and the sauce may not be as smooth. Molasses can also be added to white sugar to mimic the taste of brown sugar.
Can I make this recipe in the oven instead of a slow cooker?
You can roast sweet potatoes in the oven. Toss the cubed sweet potatoes and other ingredients in a baking dish and bake at 400 degrees F for about 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender.
How can I adjust the spice levels in this recipe?
You can increase or decrease the amount of cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. Adding a pinch of cayenne pepper can also add a touch of heat.
Can I add other spices or flavors?
You can add spices such as ginger or allspice for additional warmth. Fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme can also enhance the flavor.
How do I know when the sweet potatoes are done cooking?
The sweet potatoes are done cooking when they are fork-tender. If a fork easily slides into a piece, they're ready to be served.
Can I freeze the cooked sweet potatoes?
Yes, cooked sweet potatoes can be frozen. Allow them to cool completely, then transfer them to freezer-safe containers. They can be stored for up to 3 months.
How should I store leftovers?
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stove with a splash of water or juice.
tools needed
Slow Cooker: For cooking the sweet potatoes and allowing the flavors to meld together. Make sure your slow cooker is large enough that it is not more than 2/3rds full when all the ingredients are added (if it is too full it will not cook evenly).
Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients such as the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Potato or Vegetable Peeler: Used to peel the sweet potatoes before cubing them.
Cutting Board: Provides a stable surface for cutting and cubing the sweet potatoes.
Sharp Knife: For cutting the sweet potatoes into cubes and butter into small pieces.
Mixing Spoon: Used for mixing the spices and orange juice into the sweet potatoes.
Skillet (optional): For toasting the pecans before adding them to the sweet potatoes. You can also roast them in the oven on a rimmed baking dish (make sure to watch them closely as they can burn easily).
what goes with it?
Dr. Pepper Roast Turkey: This turkey brings a sweet depth to the table, thanks to the signature flavor of Dr Pepper. The savory notes of the roasted bird pair well with the sweet and spiced characteristics of the orange-spiced sweet potatoes.
Roasted Chicken: Pairing the sweet potatoes with roasted chicken provides a delicious balance of flavors. The savory notes of the chicken will complement the sweet and spiced nature of the potatoes.
Grilled Pork Chops: Cider grilled pork chops bring a savory richness that contrasts nicely with the sweetness of the potatoes. The caramelization from the grill adds an extra layer of flavor.
Cranberry Sauce: A spoonful of basic cranberry sauce on the side introduces some tartness that can cut through the sweetness of the dish.
Greek Yogurt: Serving a dollop of Greek yogurt drizzled with honey adds creaminess and acidity, creating a unique combination with sweet potatoes.
Feta Cheese: Crumbled feta sprinkled on top provides a salty, tangy contrast that balances the sweet and spiced potatoes.
Maple Syrup: Drizzling a bit of maple syrup over the sweet potatoes can intensify their flavor and make them even more dessert-like.
Savory Herb Bread: A slice of herby french bread serves as an excellent vehicle to mop up any excess sauce or flavors on the plate while introducing a savory note.
Chocolate Mousse: End the meal with a rich but fat free chocolate mousse. The bitterness of the chocolate can provide a nice contrast to the sweetness of the potatoes.

This recipe is outstanding. As a side dish to turkey, the spicing and texture of this dish is perfect. I was surprised at how well the recipe worked. It's so simple. The yams can be chopped the night before. I did 5 lbs and then stored them in a zip lock bag over-night in the fridge. So fast, easy and really delicious!

Delicious as a Thanksgiving side dish. To make it even easier I substituted 1/4 cup orange juice instead of juicing an orange. I also used light brown sugar instead of the dark because I like a lighter taste. This will become a family tradition. Thanks for sharing.

This was wonderful. It got rave reviews at my thanksgiving table. I actually put it in the slow cooker overnight on low for 12 hours. Then just reheated before dinner. It was even better the next day, or next 3 days for that matter, I was sad when they were all gone!

The perfect dish for company's pot luck luncheon. Prep at home into zip lock bags. Plug in crock pot at the office and combine the ingredients. The smell added to the anticipation! EXCELLENT! Everyone thinks I can cook!
Great! Just what I was looking for! Thank you! I will be back to post a rating, but I am sure they will be a '5'!!

This recipe is simple and absolutely delicious, even previous non sweet potato eaters raved about the dish! Bonus is the use of the crock pot since the oven and stove are already tied up with Thanksgiving dishes!
