Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

ingredients
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 celery rib, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 pound lean ground pork
1 pound ground veal
1 cup fresh bread crumbs
1/2 cup milk
3 eggs
1/3 cup chopped parsley
1/3 cup tomato ketchup
directions
In a heavy skillet, cook garlic, onion, celery and carrot in butter until tender. Stir in salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce; remove from heat and cool.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the 3 meats, cooked vegetables, and breadcrumbs, soaked in milk, eggs and parsley. Mix until thoroughly combined.
In a shallow baking pan, shape into 2 loaves. Bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 1 hour. Spoon tomato ketchup over loaves and bake 30 minutes or until a meat thermometer registers 155 degrees F.
Serve with scalloped potatoes if desired.
