- #46908

30-60 minutes
ingredients
4 slices bacon, chopped
1 large onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 small red cabbage, shredded
1 can (14 ounce size) Italian plum tomatoes, finely chopped, with juice
Kosher salt and freshly milled black pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 pound ham steak, cut into 4 pieces
directions
Cook the bacon in a large heavy skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 6 minutes. Transfer the bacon with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain, leaving the fat in the pan.
Add the onion to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, allspice, and cloves and cook for 1 minute. Add the balsamic vinegar and sugar and cook until the brown sugar has dissolved.
Add the cabbage and tomatoes, bring the liquid to a simmer, and cook, covered, for 30 minutes or until the cabbage is very tender. Add salt and pepper to taste and stir in the reserved bacon. Keep warm.
In another skillet heat the oil over high heat until hot; reduce the heat to medium-high and add the ham steak. Cook until lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Divide the steaks up and top each with some of the sweet-and-sour cabbage.

This iconic whiskey is a "Jack of all trades" when it comes to cooking. Toss it in some pasta, as a savory dipping sauce, and even bake it into something sweet.
