ingredients
Crust
1 pound very lean ground beef
1 egg
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed
Filling
3/4 cup Italian plum tomatoes, drained and chopped
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon basil
salt and pepper, to taste
Topping
6 ounces Mozzarella cheese
2 hot Italian sausages (optional)
1/4 teaspoon oregano
3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
directions
Mix together beef, egg, onion, garlic, salt black pepper and fennel seed. Press mixture into a 9-inch pie plate to form a shell.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Bake pie shell 15 minutes, then pour off fat (if any).
Mix together tomatoes, red pepper, oregano, basil, and salt and pepper to taste. Spread tomatoes over pie shell. Top with mozzarella cheese.
Cook sausages 5 minutes, drain, and slice into 1/2-inch rounds. Arrange sausages over cheese. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp oregano then with Parmesan cheese.
Bake an additional 15 minutes, then cut into pie-shaped wedges and serve piping hot.
