The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

3 cups sugar
1 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
5 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
directions
Cream sugar, butter and shortening. Add eggs one at a time and mix well.
Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Add alternately with milk. Beat 12 minutes. Blend in vanilla.
Grease 10" tube pan. Place cake in oven. Set at 325 degrees F. Bake for 1 1/2 hours.
