This oven-baked sauerkraut is going to be a game changer for your brats. Brown sugar and apples make a sweet and tangy baked kraut that's perfect for sausages or even something a little classier like turkey or ham.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  2-5 hrs

ingredients

2 packages sauerkraut (refrigerated product in store deli section)
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 apple, halved and cored
2 cups apple juice
fresh ground black pepper

directions

Wash sauerkraut and drain. Place sauerkraut in an oven-safe baking dish. Sprinkle over the brown sugar, and place apples on either side and pour over the apple juice.

Cover and bake at any temperature you are baking turkey or ham. Occasionally, check to make sure there is still liquid and, if not, add some apple juice. It should start with the apple juice almost covering the sauerkraut and will end with about a 1/4 cup.

Good accompaniment for turkey or ham. The aroma adds to the ambiance for the holidays.

recipe tips

Rinse the sauerkraut thoroughly to reduce its saltiness.

Drain the sauerkraut well so it doesn't become too watery while cooking.

Try adding a cinnamon stick to the baking dish for a warm, sweet flavor.

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or caraway seeds.

Check the liquid level frequently to prevent the sauerkraut from drying out.

Baking at a lower temperature for a longer time can develop deeper flavors.

For a richer taste, mix in a tablespoon of butter before baking.

Try adding some white wine or beer in place of some of the apple juice.

For a more savory option, replace the apple juice with vegetable broth.
