Fun Food Holidays™ April is National Soft Pretzel Month

If you like your bread salted and with extra crust, you're probably a fan of soft pretzels. The knotted loops create more surface area for browning, and probably originated with basic Lenten recipes that called for water and flour and little else, resulting in a heavy dough that wouldn't hold up well in a larger loaf-form.
