May 26th, 2025 is National Hamburger-Cheeseburger Day

This history of the hamburger (and its cousin the cheeseburger) is unclear at best. There are many stories and theories about who really invented it. While the history is most likely fascinating, we are more interested in the versatility of this culinary creation.
Hamburgers
In their most basic form, they consist of ground beef pressed into a patty and cooked on a grill, under a broiler, or in a pan. However, such a simple start lends well to endless variations. Seasonings used in the meat can range from simple salt and pepper, to Italian herbs, to Asian flavors, to hot and spicy. Other add-ins can include diced onions, peppers, or other vegetables.
And let's not forget the toppings. Traditional favorites include sliced onion, tomatoes, lettuce, and condiments like ketchup or mustard. But like the basic burger, toppings have evolved too. Try a burger topped with sprouts and avocado, or fried onion rings. Toppings can also include cheese. Which leads us to...
Cheeseburgers
Using a hamburger as a base, cheese is added as the star of the show. Typically a meltable cheese is used such as Cheddar, Swiss, or American. But more upscale cheeseburgers like to sport sassy cheeses like Feta, or Gorgonzola.
There are far more variations on the hamburger/cheeseburger we could discuss, but we'll let you peruse the recipes and find your own favorites!
