Easy Black Forest Cake

ingredients
1 package Devil's food cake mix
1 can (21 ounce size) cherry pie filling
1 tablespoon almond flavoring
1 package (5 ounce size) instant vanilla pudding mix
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 container (8 ounce size) frozen whipped topping (thawed)
2 tablespoons chocolate sprinkles
maraschino cherries
directions
Bake cake according to box directions in a 9x13x2 pan. Mix pie filling and almond flavoring.
While cake is still warm poke holes in top with fork and spread cherry filling over cake. While cake cools prepare pudding adding extra vanilla flavoring.
Spread pudding over cake carefully covering cherry pie filling. Decorate with chocolate sprinkles and maraschino cherries. Cover and refrigerate.

The recipe says prepare pudding but doesn't say how much milk to use or when to add the whipped topping. I've made this cake twice and each one was a disaster because I can't find the right mixture of pudding, milk and shipped topping. the recipe needs to be more concise.
I believe you are supposed to follow the directions on the package of pudding as to how much milk to use. I would assume the whipped topping is to "top" the cake and isn't added to the mixture.
