Cherry Macaroon Cookies

ingredients
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries, plus more for garnish (drain well before chopping)
2 cups shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream together butter and shortening. Gradually add sugar, mixing well. Add eggs and almond extract, and beat well. Blend in flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in cherries, coconut and nuts.
Drop by rounded teaspoons onto lightly greased baking sheets or baking sheets covered with parchment paper. Garnish each cookie with one quarter of a maraschino cherry.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
