Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

- #62254
These slow cooked beans are crazy with flavor. Three kinds of beans are cooked in a beef and bacon barbecue-style sauce.

ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 pound bacon, chopped
1 cup chopped onion
1 box (10 ounce size) frozen baby lima beans
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cans (31 ounce size) baked beans
1 can (16 ounce size) light kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 teaspoon salt
1 dash black pepper
directions
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, bacon, and onion. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is cooked and the fat has rendered from the bacon. Drain off any excess grease and place the beef mixture in the crock pot.
Cook the lima beans as directed on the package and drain off any excess water. Add the lima beans to the crock pot.
Add the ketchup, brown sugar, baked beans, kidney beans, salt, and pepper to the crock pot. Mix well.
Cover the crock pot and cook on low heat for 2-3 hours or until everything is heated through and the flavors have melded.
Serve the crazy beans hot.

I was thrilled to find this recipe. One of our neighbors made it for a block party almost 40 years ago and I loved it then but lost the recipe long ago. I am looking forward to making it for a church potluck.
