Looking for tender meatballs? Applesauce is the secret ingredient that keeps these meatballs soft. Simmering them in the tangy sauce gives them extra flavor.
MEATBALLS
1 1/2 pound ground beef
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup bread crumbs
1 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon salt
black pepper, to taste
SAUCE
1 cup brown sugar
1 onion, diced
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
3 whole cloves
1/3 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup vinegar
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup A-1 steak sauce
In a bowl, combine the ground beef, eggs, bread crumbs, applesauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Shape the meat into 1 1/2-inch size balls.
Heat a thin layer of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly coat the meatballs in flour then place in the skillet. Cook, turning as needed, until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix the sauce ingredients together until well mixed. Pour over the cooked meatballs. Let simmer on medium-low heat until the meatballs are cooked through.
Serve the applesauce meatballs and sauce with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice, if desired.

the meatballs are fantastic - the sauce not so much. Too spicy - I've been adding water to the sauce so it doesn't overpower those delicious meatballs!
