Slow Cooker Three Envelope Roast

  • #23351

The famous crock pot roast recipe that uses just three seasoning ingredients for the most delicious roast you'll ever have. Look for cuts of beef like chuck roast, shoulder steak, rump roast, or bottom round. These normally tough cuts of meat turn out tender and flavorful when used in this type of slow cooker recipe. The amount of seasoning will work on a wide range of roast sizes, we recommend a roast within the 2-4 pound range but you could use it on a larger one as well just adjust the cooking time as needed.

ingredients

1 cup water
1 (2-4 pound size) beef roast, chuck or arm roasts work well
1 envelope dry ranch salad dressing mix
1 envelope dry Italian salad dressing mix
1 envelope dry brown gravy mix

directions

Pour the water in the bottom of the crock pot.

Place the roast in the crock pot.

Evenly sprinkle the roast with the ranch dressing, Italian dressing, and brown gravy mixes.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 7 hours (adjust the cooking time based on the size of the roast) or until the roast is tender.

To serve, remove the roast from the crock pot and set aside on a cutting board with a piece of aluminum foil lightly covering it and let sit for 10 minutes. If you wish to thicken the juices left in the crock pot, make a slurry of 1 tablespoon cornstarch in 1/4 cup cold water and stir into the juices. Turn the crock pot to high while you slice the roast so the juices will thicken into a light gravy.

Remove the foil cover from the roast and slice against the grain. Serve the roast with the thicken juices if desired.

I've been married for 57 years and finally have found the perfect recipe for eye of round roast. Delicious!!!

I have used this recipe for years exactly as is, usually with at least a 4 pound rump roast. You can use any cheaper cut of beef or whatever is on sale, it will still turn out tender enough to cut with a fork. I usually cook the roast all night and put the pull out crock in the fridge all day. Then I cut the meat so it will slice when it is cool. I skim the fat then sieve the juices and add cornstarch and water to thicken into gravy with a whisk. Serve with mashed potatoes, salad and fresh steamed broccoli.

Can anyone tell me what size roast they used?

    • We used about a 3 pound roast for our review. Cooking time will vary by what size roast you use and what model of crock pot you have.

  6. Valerie REVIEW:

The recipe doesn't specify what size roast to use. If you use a small one, you might want to cut the amount of the seasonings down or it will probably be on the salty side. A larger roast you can get away with the full amount. I also recommend combining the three dry mixes first, then evenly coating the roast before putting it in the crock pot for best results. The roast turned out so delicious! And honestly, you wouldn't guess that it would from the mixes used but they contain just the right combination of flavors that really work well. You may also have to adjust the cooking time based on your crock pot - not all models cook the same. Ours cooks like the older models so 7 hours wasn't actually long enough, but many newer models may cook faster.

This is probably the easiest crock pot roast I have ever made! It is a little salty so I cut down on the ranch dressing......only usuing a 1/4th of pkg. I also added a can of mushrooms & pieces drained along with cut up carrots......served on bed of noodles and it was a hit.....if you really want to make it look pretty serving - sprinkle parsley over it at the end after it is cut up!

No one ever believes me that this uses only the ingredients that it does because it comes out so tender and flavorful. Great recipe.

  10. MD REVIEW:

This recipe is awesome! Has the best flavor of any roast I've ever had.

  11. calking REVIEW:

great, easy recipe. The mix of seasonings is very tasty. I add baby carrots, quatered potatoes and whole mushroom on top of the meat.

  12. slicky REVIEW:

Good, but to salty. How can I cut that salt??

    • If you can find low sodium versions of any of the mixes that'd help. You could maybe add something sweet to balance it - like a pinch of sugar?

This is in my opinion a perfect way to prepare a beef roast. I browned the roast, deglazed the pan and added 1 can beef broth either 15 or 16 oz can. I then added a cup of water and mixed, then the packets of flavors and poured over roast, cooked on high a couple of hours, then low for a couple, roast simply fell apart, mixed some cornstarch and water and added juice to a pan on stove and made a pan of gravey, very tasty gravy will definately do this again.

  14. hoodhome REVIEW:

This recipe is the easiest, most flavorful, delicious, tender and moist roast I've ever cooked. I've made it 2 times now. Even though it's just me and my husband, I buy a 4+ pound chuck roast, divide it after cooking into 3-4 meals and freeze them. It's wonderful leftover too. Also, I found that searing the roast before putting it in the crockpot helps keep it more moist

  15. boogus REVIEW:

Easiest, no mess roast, and flavor is absolutely stunning to your taste buds. Also makes a wonderful zesty gravey for your potatoes.

  16. terriw43 REVIEW:

This was very good -- in fact, I will probably do my pot roasts this way from now on. I've tried other pot roast slowcooker recipes and this one is the best I've tried. It was incredibly easy and tasted very, very good! I did increase the water amount to 2 cups and since I had a clove of garlic I wanted to get rid of, I sliced it very thinly, made slits in different parts of the roast and inserted the thin slices so that they cooked within it. Very outstanding recipe and will definately do it again!

  17. cyl REVIEW:

I wasn't too sure about this recipe but I kept seeing it over & over. Well I'm to tell you it is awsome. I highly recommend giving it a try. You won't be sorry.
