ingredients

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup shortening
4 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk, more if needed

directions

Beat ingredients adding one after another, beating till smooth, from the top of the list to the bottom. Add enough milk to make the correct consistency for your frosting.

The consistency can be adjusted by adding more powdered sugar or less milk. It can frost a cake and also be used for decorating a cake.

cook's notes

This frosting is not overly sweet and this is why it is my favorite.

  1. mandi REVIEW:

Absolutely the best buttercream I have ever made. The vanilla was the best part. It cut the powdered sugar flavor. I made it both with coffee and milk. It was best with milk (as a coffee fanatic this shocked me). So creamy and delicious without being sickening sweet. I could have ate the entire bowl with no cake and I really don't love frosting. I used room temp butter and fat free milk. And Mexican vanilla

I thought this icing was great! It has flavor and sweetness without being overly sweet, and it holds its form beautifully. My boys and husband all enjoyed it, too. This is a keeper!

  3. Angie REVIEW:

I needed a quick recipe for frosting so my 3-year-old and I could finish the cupcakes we baked on a whim. I had all the necessary ingredients for this one. It was tasty, but in my opinion there's too much vanilla. Maybe if you us imitation vanilla it would be okay, but when using pure, I would cut it down by a half a teaspoon or so.

It was very good, but I made a few alterations so I can't give it a full five stars. First, I used coffee instead of milk, so that it doesn't have to be refrigerated. Also, I used a little more vanilla than called for to offset the coffee, and because I don't like the aftertaste of powdered sugar.
