Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon double acting baking powder
7 tablespoons butter, room temperature
3 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon anise seeds

In a bowl, sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Mix in butter thoroughly. Add sugar, egg, anise seeds, and just enough milk to bind the mixture into a firm dough.
Knead the dough well on a floured board and shape into nut-sized balls. Flatten them with a spatula and cook, a few at a time, on a greased hot griddle or in a heavy skillet until golden brown.
