ingredients
TOPPING
4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine, softened
1/2 teaspoon salt
CAKE
1 cup baking molasses
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 cups boiling water
directions
For topping, in a large bowl, combine the topping ingredients and mix until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of this mixture for the top of the cake.
In another bowl, combine and mix well the cake ingredients. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir.
Pour into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with reserved crumb mixture. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes.
This is a cake variation of the Pennsylvania Dutch Shoo Fly Pie. Called that because it's so sweet that when it was put on the window sill to cool, somebody had to stand watch to "shoo" the flies away.

They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
