A basic chocolate cake made from scratch can be a delicious and impressive dessert for any occasion.

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup hot water
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 pinch salt
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9-inch cake pans and lightly dust with cocoa powder. Shake out any excess cocoa powder.
In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, shortening, and eggs and beat on medium speed with an electric mixer.
Whisk together the cocoa powder and hot water until well mixed.
Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Mix the cocoa water and the milk.
With the mixer running on medium speed, alternately add the flour and cocoa mixture to the shortening mixture, beating well until combined.
Add the vanilla and mix for 30 seconds.
Divide the cake batter between the prepared cake pans and place the pans in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
Remove the pans from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.

The best basic choc cake recipe I have ever tried. Perfect for bundt or pan, icing, glaze or with nothing at all. Will try as a roulade, see how it goes. The best!!
