The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

1 1/2 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup soft butter
3 eggs
3 tablespoons heavy cream
1 1/4 cup golden raisins
1/2 pound pitted dates
1/2 pound pitted cherries
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 orange, zest and juice
1 lemon, zest and juice
pineapple citron
2 jiggers rum
candied cherries
directions
Mix 1 cup of the sugar, flour and salt together. Cut in butter. Add 1 egg and then cream. Mix until well blended.
Spread in 15" x 10" x 1" pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes. Mix remaining ingredients well, except the candied fruit.
Spread on the pastry. Bake an additional 20 minutes. Decorate with candied fruit.
